Initiative Prevents Tracheostomy-Related Pressure Injuries
A New York hospital ICU was able to reduce the incidence of medical device-related pressure injuries following a tracheostomy to zero for four years, according to a study published in AACN Advanced Critical Care. A key part of the new clinical process was a revised procedural kit and documentation, with a foam dressing placed under the tracheostomy flange during insertion.

Nurses work for the good of society, and a new study from the University of Iowa finds they are more likely to feel better about their jobs when hospitals remind them of that. The finding is important at a time when nurses are under mounting pressure from patients and others who increasingly treat them with disdain, in particular through the COVID-19 pandemic.
American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Recognizes 185 Hospital Units With Beacon Award for Excellence in 2022
A total of 185 units from 134 hospitals earned the AACN Beacon Award for Excellence in 2022. Of note, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, had five units recognized with gold-level awards, the program’s highest distinction. Addressing stigma is critical to containing the monkeypox outbreak
Inaccurate media coverage of the monkeypox outbreak has resulted in misinformation about the many ways it can be spread, resulting in stigma (shaming and biased attitudes) toward people who develop the disease. Nurses play a key role in delivering appropriate care related to monkeypox by creating safe spaces for affected individuals regardless of sexual behaviors, race and ethnicity, gender, or co-infections. These conclusions come from two papers in the November/December issue of The Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (JANAC), the official journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care. AACN Research Grants Influence Nursing Practice
The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses announces the newest recipients of its annual research grants and invites clinicians and researchers to submit projects online by Oct. 28, 2022, for the next application cycle. AACN will award up to three $50,000 Impact Research Grants in 2023, as well as co-sponsoring the AACN-Sigma Critical Care Grant, with up to $10,000 in funding.

There are more than 15 million US adults with a history of cancer who need high quality survivorship care. Medical provider uncertainty and cancer survivorship knowledge gaps continue to persist. Challenges exist in the transition of patients from oncology to primary care for continued life-sustaining cancer survivorship care. It is important for primary care providers to recognize common oncologic emergencies. In order to improve outcomes, proper transition and coordination of care are needed for all cancer survivors.
