Being able to vividly imagine graduating college predicts grade point average and whether a student continues in a STEM or business degree program, according to a longitudinal study from Arizona State University. The study also found sex differences between how men and women visualized their post-graduation goals: Men increased the level of detail, but women remained stagnant. These findings could have implications for why women are underrepresented in STEM and business careers.

Ithaca College Graduates Encouraged to Find A Gift in the Losses

Emmy-nominated television creator and producer Liz Tigelaar told some 1,300 Ithaca College graduates that the beauty in life comes in the questions and the unknowns, and to relish being in a moment where there is so much to discover. A 1998 IC graduate herself, Tigelaar was the main speaker at the college’s 126th Commencement ceremonies held on Sunday, May 23.

Underwood to be 2021 Penn Nursing Commencement Speaker

US Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, who serves Illinois’ 14th Congressional District, will be the 2021 Penn Nursing commencement speaker. The ceremony, which will be virtual due to the continuing pandemic, will take place on Monday, May 17, 2021 at 3:00 PM EST. Underwood is the first woman, the first person of color, and the first millennial to represent her community in Congress. She is also the youngest African American woman to serve in the United States House of Representatives.

UCI to host historic virtual graduation ceremonies on June 13

Irvine, Calif., June 3, 2020 – More than 7,400 students and their families will participate in the University of California, Irvine’s first remote commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 13. UCI will grant degrees to 9,907 undergraduates this academic year. And in a testament to the school’s dedication to access and affordability, 47 percent of those bachelor’s degrees will go to first-generation college students.

California State University Center to Close Achievements Gaps to Open at Cal State Long Beach

The California State University (CSU) announced today that California State University, Long Beach has been selected as the host site for the CSU Center to Close Achievement Gaps (CCAG). The center, set to open this spring, will focus on identifying and refining proven strategies to eliminate equity gaps at all levels of education and will share training, tools and evidence-based best practices with colleges of education across the CSU and education partners across California.

Nation’s Newest Physicians Graduate Virtually in the Midst of COVID-19

The 63 members of the class of 2020 recited the Hippocratic Oath in unison, virtually, as they were conferred the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. More than half the class will start their residency program in a state that is currently considered a hotspot for COVID-19. Seven are headed to New York; others will be going to New Jersey, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Louisiana and Texas. One of the most popular residencies among FAU’s class of 2020 is emergency medicine; eight of the 63 graduates (13 percent) will begin training in emergency medicine this July.

Uniformed Services University to hold Virtual Graduation for new Military Docs, Advanced Practice Nurses

WIth all of the physical distancing and other restrictions currently in place, the Uniformed Services University will now be holding a virtual commencement ceremony on Wednesday, April 1. Medical students and advanced practice nursing students from the USU class of 2020 will be graduating several weeks early to help support their colleagues in the military health system amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
