UrduEverett Alvarez, Jr., who was held as a Prisoner-of-War at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” during the Vietnam war for nearly nine months, will deliver the Commencement address to the future military and public health physicians, scientists, psychologists and educators. Alvarez is a retired Navy commander, former deputy director of the Peace Corps and former administrator of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
USU held separate graduation ceremonies at its clinical rotation sites last week for its Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing students as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. The university’s Postgraduate Dental College and College of Allied Health Sciences graduates will participate in separate ceremonies next month.
“We are extremely proud of our Class of 2021 graduates. The past year has offered extraordinary challenges to these students because of the pandemic, but they have met them head-on and are now poised and ready — and well prepared — for the next phase of their careers in support of our military servicemembers and their families,” said Dr. Richard W. Thomas, president of USU.
Saturday’s ceremony will be streamed live via the University’s YouTube and Facebook accounts to family and friends who are unable to join their graduating students this year because of pandemic restrictions on campus.
