ATS Research Program Announces Partner Grant Recipients
The American Thoracic Society Research Program today announced the six recipients of the Non-Profit Partner Grants for the 2021-2022 grant cycle. These grants are awarded through partnerships with the American Lung Association, CHEST Foundation, COPD Foundation, and the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research.
ATS Research Program Awards Unrestricted Grants for 2021-22
The American Thoracic Society Research Program today announced the five recipients of Unrestricted Grants for the 2021-2022 grant cycle. These grants support research in critical care pulmonary and sleep medicine, the three pillars of the Society. Each recipient is awarded $40,000 because they rose to the challenge regarding providing novel approaches to how some lung diseases are managed, as well as fostering health care quality and improving patient outcomes.

The ATS Research Program is pleased to announce that William Zhang, MD, of Weill Cornell Medical Center is the recipient of the 2020-2021 ATS/CSL Behring Research Award in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. The $50,000 award will support Dr. Zhang’s research study, “Hyperferritinemia in COVID-19 ARDS: Friend or Foe?”

ATS/CHEST Foundation Award First Research Grant in Diversity
Thomas S. Valley, MD, of the University of Michigan has been selected as the first-ever recipient of the ATS/CHEST Foundation Research Grant in Diversity. The focus of the research grant is clinical research that contributes to the understanding of the pathophysiology of treatment of conditions related to pulmonary, critical care, or sleep medicine that disproportionately affects underrepresented minority patient groups.

The ATS Foundation Research Program/Pulmonary Hypertension Association has awarded Rahul Kumar, PhD, of the University of California, San Francisco, a $80,000 Foundation Partner grant. A $50,000 Foundation Partner grant was awarded to Jason Boehme, MD, also of the University of California, San Francisco. Ke Yuan, PhD, of Boston Children’s Hospital is the 2019 recipient of the Aldrighetti Research Award for Young Investigators. The award, in the amount of $80,000, is sponsored by Actelion Pharmaceuticals US, Inc, through a partnership with the Pulmonary Hypertension Association.
