With more than 210 live and pre-recorded lectures, nine scientific sessions, seven sponsored satellite symposia, and oral and poster presentations from more than 1400 accepted abstracts, the Congress will showcase new clinical research and advances in osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, frailty, sarcopenia, and rare skeletal diseases. The Congress has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®) with 16 European CME credits (ECMEC®s).

ESCEO President and Congress Co-Chair Professor Jean-Yves Reginster stated: “The IOF-ESCEO Congress is a much anticipated annual forum for health professionals in the field. Due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, IOF and ESCEO took the difficult decision to transition the live-event to a virtual format. I’m delighted to say that the success of this virtual format has exceeded all our expectations. As reflected in the record number of registrations, the virtual format will allow more delegates to attend than ever before, and lead to extensive uptake of the excellent sessions. Each and every lecture or session, as well as the virtual exhibition booths, can be accessed, at the delegate’s leisure, for a period of three months after the Congress.”

The Congress, which attracts rheumatologists, endocrinologists, orthopaedists, geriatricians, gynaecologists and a broad range of other related healthcare professionals, will provide new information about a wide range of topics, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, risk assessment, nutrition, bone fragility, physical therapy, healthcare policy, secondary fracture prevention, rare bone disease, sarcopenia, and falls prevention, among others.

As well, there will be Award presentations and a dynamic exhibition featuring numerous virtual booths to present new products and services, and dedicated booths to present the work of IOF, ESCEO and member patient and scientific organizations from around the world.

IOF President and Congress Co-Chair Professor Cyrus Cooper added:

“Affecting over 1.7 billion people globally, musculoskeletal disorders are the second greatest cause of disability as measured by years lived with disability. There is increasing evidence that the pandemic is having a detrimental impact on musculoskeletal health, due in part to less physical activity and the difficulty in accessing testing and maintaining continuity of treatment. Experts in the field are deeply concerned about the resulting impact on the long-term musculoskeletal health of older adults worldwide. The expected backlog in testing and treatment will certainly pose a challenge to the medical community. This is why, now more than ever, it is vital that IOF and ESCEO, as leading organizations in the field, continue to advance knowledge and education among health professionals through this global Congress.”

The Congress abstracts will be published in the scientific journal ‘Osteoporosis International’, Volume 30, Supplement 1, 2020.
