João Barata, a physicist in the Nuclear Theory Group at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, has received a fellowship at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. In October 2024, Barata will begin the three-year-long appointment in CERN’s Department of Theoretical Physics.

For Protons and Neutrons, Things Aren’t the Same Inside Nuclei
Quarks are distributed differently in free protons and neutrons versus those inside nuclei, something called “the EMC effect.” Scientists previously thought that the EMC effect treated the up and down quarks in protons and neutrons equally. New high-precision data from the MARATHON experiment indicates that the EMC effect may exert more influence on the distribution of down quarks compared to up quarks inside nuclei.
Arán Garcia-Bellido: Then and Now / 2011 Early Career Award Winner
His Early Career Research award allowed Arán Garcia-Bellido to transition from his work at the Fermilab Tevatron collider – establishing the rare production of top quarks with bottom quarks – to setting up a group at the LHC focused the search for the Higgs boson and possible new generation of quarks.
