Explaining Science Through Dance

Science can be difficult to explain to the public. Explaining a theoretical science concept to high school students requires a new way of thinking altogether, which is precisely what researchers at UC San Diego did when they orchestrated a dance with high school students at Orange Glen High School in Escondido as a way to explain topological insulators. The experiment was led by former graduate student Matthew Du and UC San Diego Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Joel Yuen-Zhou.

Rubin Observatory Brings a Universe of Discovery to the Public

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory Education and Public Outreach program launches today, marking the first time that a major next-generation astronomy research facility has integrated a comprehensive and fully NSF-funded outreach program into its construction phase. When it begins science operations in late 2024, Rubin will produce a complete survey of the southern sky every few nights to study dark matter, dark energy, and the changing Universe. Rubin will share this adventure with the public.

Three projects from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory are featured in the National Science Foundation-funded 2021 STEM for All Video Showcase running May 11 to May 18, showcasing the Observatory’s commitment to equity, social justice, and creative solutions to engagement during COVID-19.
