Hospital AI Learns to Say ‘I Don’t Know’

Sepsis occurs when the body works so hard to fight an infection that the immune system injures the patient’s own tissues. Detecting sepsis early and delivering antibiotics promptly is key to saving lives. UC San Diego Health researchers developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model to predict who is at the greatest risk for sepsis. The AI system also learned to detect erroneous data and unfamiliar cases and tagged them as “indeterminates,” thus significantly reducing false alarms.
