DeepSeek, a 1-year-old startup, unveiled a ChatGPT-like AI model called R1, which appears comparable to OpenAI’s, Google’s or Meta’s popular AI models. The company says it spent just $5.6 million on computing power for its base model, compared with the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars U.S. companies have spent on their AI technologies.
Users have rushed to check out the new chatbot. However, authorities are raising concerns about data security and privacy. Tech experts are also questioning how DeepSeek can operate high-performing AI models at a fraction of the cost of established companies.
University at Albany experts are available to discuss DeepSeek and its impact on the AI industry, including:
- George Berg, associate professor at UAlbany’s College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity. Berg studies artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity and maker technologies. He also works on pedagogical methods in STEM education and has shared his thoughts on using ChatGPT in the classroom.
- Unni Pillai, associate professor at UAlbany’s College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering. Pillai studies how economic factors influence the rate at which technical advances are made, how government policies can influence the rate of technical change and the welfare impact of these policies. His research has focused on technologies such as solar photovoltaics and the supply chain of tool manufacturers in the semiconductor industry.
