“I am honored that Mount Sinai is being recognized for its accomplishments, especially during a year that presented some of the biggest challenges for hospitals across the world,” said Kristin Myers, MPH, Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Dean for Information Technology (IT) at the Mount Sinai Health System. “Through collaborative efforts spanning the entire Health System, we were able to enhance integrated technologies, maximize new data-driven opportunities, and improve cutting-edge treatment to care for thousands during a demanding and uncertain time.”
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mount Sinai conducted about 25 telehealth visits per day, or well under 1 percent of its appointments. The Health System now provides about 3,000 telehealth visits on average per day, or about 15 percent of all ambulatory care, said Bruce Darrow, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), Senior Vice President of Information Technology, Deputy Chief Information Officer, and Chief Medical Information Officer for the Mount Sinai Health System.
“We experienced tremendous growth in telemedicine over a short period of time, but our team still worked tirelessly to support doctors delivering exceptional care to our patients,” said Darrow, who helped scale up infrastructure for virtual visits over the past year. “Information technology and other advanced tools—which remain a part of our larger ongoing mission—have enabled Mount Sinai to seamlessly coordinate efforts across departments, enhance patient flow, and quickly, effectively reach more patients through telehealth.”
The system’s Information Technology Department also provided support—ranging from establishing data feeds to facilitating secure cloud service—to assist the Mount Sinai Clinical Intelligence Center, a data science center dedicated to COVID-19 research that was established last spring in response to the pandemic. The Center has developed machine learning models to predict critical illness in COVID-19 patients; studied the use of wearable devices including the Apple Watch to detect COVID-19 symptoms and predict diagnosis; and teamed up with Google Nest and hospital operations to use the latest in video and audio technologies to monitor COVID-19 patients.
In partnership with the global data research company Statista Inc., Newsweek created the World’s Best Smart Hospital 2021 rankings based on worldwide recommendations from hospital managers and medical professionals, analyzing more than 13,000 votes in a survey on smart hospitals.
