Basics of chemical analysis

Technological developments involves all aspects of life, especially the fields of science, engineering, and medicine. This reflects in the students and researcher a lack of using traditional methods to learn the basics of each science. One of the conventional techniques is qualitative analysis, which is a type of analytical chemistry.

Principles of Qualitative Inorganic Analysis: Precipitation, Separation and Identification of Cations

focuses on the qualitative analysis that aims to know the components of the sample according to its chemical and physical properties. This type of chemical analysis is divided into the analysis of inorganic compounds and analysis of organic compounds. The student and the researcher will learn how to detect cations for salts and mixtures of inorganic materials only.

Principles of Qualitative Inorganic Analysis: Precipitation, Separation and Identification of Cations

includes the basic scientific information about the separation and identification of the cations in the mixture. This book begins with the general guidelines for laboratory work with emphases on the safety rules. The common equipment is also mentioned. Cations is divided into groups, and each group is assigned to the group reagent. The separation of cation depends on the acidity and alkalinity of the medium and the cation’s solubility.

The separation and identification of the cations process start with the physical examination followed by the chemical examination. Several tests will be performed on any sample, such as the color test, as it will notice that there is a link between the color of the salt and the potential element, such as if the solution is green, then the probability of nickel metal is present. The other test is solubility, and this test is very important, through which the researcher can divide the cations into six groups. Depending on the reagent used, some ions are precipitated and others remain dissolved in the solution, making it easier to separate and detect the ions. The final test performed on each sample is the moisture test wherein the student can identify ions through sedimentation or changing the color of ions in the sample. At the end of each chapter there is a simple summary of the work method for the six groups in the form of a template, which facilitates the follow-up process by students and researchers. The book also contains a set of questions that will increase students ‘knowledge of the book’s topics.

This book is written for the university students at the early stage and any worker in the laboratory interested in the separation and identification of the cations in the mixture.
