Marijuana May Increase Risk of Heart Disease in Healthy Adults

Article title: Habitual cannabis use is associated with altered cardiac mechanics and arterial stiffness, but not endothelial function in young healthy smokers

Authors: Christian P. Cheung, Alexandra Michelle Coates, Philip J. Millar, Jamie F. Burr

From the authors: “Our cross-sectional data demonstrates that young, ostensibly healthy cannabis users have greater arterial stiffness and altered cardiac mechanics compared to non-users. These findings suggest that cannabis users may be at greater risk for the development of future cardiovascular disease.”

This study is highlighted as one of March’s “best of the best” as part of the American Physiological Society’s APSselect program.
