Dr. Heary earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine and completed a residency in neurological surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. Following his neurosurgical residency, he completed an orthopedic spine fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Board certified in neurological surgery, Dr. Heary specializes in revision spine surgery, spine and spinal cord injury, spine and spinal cord tumors, and spinal deformity.
Dr. Heary recently served as the Vice President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). He also serves on several other nationally recognized boards and committees. He is the only neurosurgeon in the U.S. who has been the president of both the Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) and the Lumbar Spine Research Society (LSRS). He has been the chair of the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine & Peripheral Nerves. He has authored 165 peer-reviewed journal articles, over 100 abstracts, 70 book chapters, and his 4th textbook will be published in 2020. He has been on the faculty for over 300 instructional courses at national neurosurgery meetings and has strong academic credentials.
