First “Race, Ethnicity and Alzheimer’s in America” Report and Updated 2021 Alzheimer’s Facts & Figures Report

The forthcoming 2021 Alzheimer’s Association Facts & Figures Report, as well as a new supplemental report “Race, Ethnicity and Alzheimer’s in America,” will be released March 2. Facts and Figures provides in-depth information on Alzheimer’s and other dementias in the U.S., including the latest stats on prevalence, mortality, costs, caregiving and other insights both nationally and with state by state data. Alzheimer’s and dementia impacts approximately 1 in 9 adults aged 65 and older in the U.S.  Black Americans are twice – and Hispanic Americans one and a half times – as likely as to have Alzheimer’s than whites.

The first-of-its-kind, supplemental report from the Association will provide a deep exploration of racial attitudes, beliefs and impacts for people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Findings from two new national surveys of Black, Hispanic, Asian, Native and White Americans, reveals compelling insights regarding barriers to care and support services, trust in medical research and healthcare discrimination across these groups.

Journalists interested in advance, embargoed information on the reports, as well as potential interviews with Alzheimer’s Association’s Drs. Carl V. Hill, chief diversity and inclusion officer, or Maria Carrillo, chief medical officer, should contact [email protected].  Dr. Carrillo is available for English and/or Spanish language media. The 2021 Alzheimer’s Facts & Figures Report will be published in the March issue of Alzheimer’s & Dementia, the Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.
