Dr. Lisa Gwynn Named President of Florida Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics

Lisa Gwynn, D.O., M.B.A., associate professor of clinical pediatrics and public health sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has been named president of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP).

Dr. Gwynn’s two-year appointment, effective Sept. 6, was voted on by FCAAP members across Florida. Her election as president comes at the end of her two-year term as FCAAP’s vice president. She currently serves as chair of FCAAP’s School Health Task Force and as Chapter E-Cigarette Champion.

“I’m looking forward to working with FCAAP’s wonderful new executive committee and very talented Board of Directors,” said Dr. Gwynn. “I hope to bring new perspective to the role and look forward to working collaboratively to grow the organization and take it to the next level.”

FCAAP advocates for children and the health issues they face. The organization also supports pediatricians and pediatric specialists caring for the health and welfare of Florida’s children.

“Dr. Gwynn is an amazing asset to the FCAAP,” said current FCAAP President D. Paul Robinson, M.D. “She is smart, insightful, and always willing to take on the next project. I am amazed at her organizational skills, positive attitude, and her calm in the face of any issue. She will be a fabulous president, and I look forward to working with her.”

Dr. Gwynn, medical director of the UHealth Pediatric Mobile Clinic and the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation School Health Initiative, plans to bring her own health outreach experiences to her new role with FCAAP.

She is particularly interested in expanding FCAAP’s work in school health care and child immunizations — areas in which she has a wealth of expertise.

Through her role with the School Health Initiative, Dr. Gwynn oversees pediatric clinics serving 10,000 students across nine Miami-Dade Schools. As director of the Pediatric Mobile Clinic — which rolled out a new telehealth-equipped vehicle in 2019 — Dr. Gwynn and team provide access to free wellness care, check-ups, physicals, and immunizations for underserved children across Miami. The mobile clinic is now also providing free critical COVID-19 testing to children throughout the Miami-Dade community.

“The Pediatric Mobile Clinic and the School Health Initiative are both wonderful community pediatric outreach programs geared toward caring for the underserved,” said Dr. Gwynn.

As FCAAP president, she hopes to broaden the organization’s statewide efforts to ensure health care access for underserved populations.

FCAAP Nominating Committee Chair Madeline Joseph, M.D., said, “Dr. Gwynn brings to this position many of her skills and talents as a pediatrician who practiced in both private practice and in academics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. I believe that Dr. Gwynn’s knowledge, skills, and sound judgment will ensure a strong and a visionary leadership of FCAAP’s future endeavors to serve our FCAAP members. That includes facing challenges in providing optimal care for our children and also looking for opportunities to continue the growth of our chapter.”

Dr. Gwynn joined the University of Miami faculty in 2010 following nine years in private practice. She earned her medical degree from Nova Southeastern University School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at the University of Miami and Jackson Health System. Dr. Gwynn earned an M.B.A. in health sector management and policy from the University of Miami School of Business.
