New Brunswick, N.J. (June 15, 2020) – Rutgers University–New Brunswick Professor David A. Robinson is available for interviews on the role of snow in the climate system, snow variability and the extent of snow cover during the satellite era.
“The extent of snow on the ground is one of the largest intra-annual variables in the climate system, most notably over Northern Hemisphere lands. Snow cover is closely associated with other climate variables, including precipitation and temperature,” said Robinson, a distinguished professor in the Department of Geography in the School of Arts and Sciences. “The Rutgers Global Snow Lab that I direct is involved in monitoring snow cover extent and maintains the premier satellite-derived record of extent over the more than 50-year satellite era. Changes noted over the decades are a long-term decline in spring snow cover, which is closely associated with rising temperatures, and a recent increase in fall snow extent over higher latitudes, which may be associated with atmospheric circulation changes and increased precipitation.”
Robinson, the New Jersey State Climatologist, oversees the Rutgers NJ Weather Network and helps coordinate the New Jersey Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. He is scheduled to give a webinar on snow’s role in the climate system at 2 p.m. on June 16.
