Online press briefing – the future of coral

Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) invites reporters to a private online briefing with two scientists who are looking at the impacts of climate change through their coral reef research.

The two scientists, from Okinawa and Florida, will provide insights into current global environmental issues such as ocean warming, acidification, heatwaves and changes to coral reef ecosystems. The discussion will focus on topics like:

-The implications of climate change on tropical areas: food, tourism, and sustainable development

-The future, the present and the past of coral reefs and their surrounding environment

-The current status of coral reef research: New approaches and technologies

-Ocean remediation activities

Speakers:

Dr. Timothy Ravasi – Professor, Marine Climate Change Unit, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University

Prof. Ravasi established a multi-disciplinary research program aiming to understand the effects of climate change on coral reef ecosystems, and particularly on fish communities.

Dr. Jose M. Eirin-Lopez – Associate Professor Institute of Environment Department of Biological Sciences Florida International University

Prof. Eirin-Lopez’s research goal is focused on making fundamental contributions to the study of marine environmental epigenetics using molecular, ecological, and toxicological approaches.
