She brings with her experience in a variety of sectors in the healthcare field, from serving as a practicing physician and medical researcher in academia, to policy development and administration of innovative programs in health plans and healthcare systems.
Mohanty comes to The SCAN Foundation from Kaiser Permanente, where as Vice President of Care Coordination for Medicaid and Vulnerable Populations she brought to life its highly successful Thrive Local social health network. The goal of the program is to achieve individuals’ total health through seamless coordination and integration of physical, mental, and social care. Prior to that, she served as Senior Medical Director for L.A. Care Health Plan, the largest public health plan in the country. Mohanty earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, a medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, a master’s degree in public health from Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
“It’s very exciting to be joining The SCAN Foundation because I have long admired Bruce Chernof and the tremendous work he, the talented and dedicated team, and our strategic partners across the country have accomplished,” said Mohanty, who will start work in January 2021. “Now the job is to further catalyze these efforts and fundamentally shift the paradigm about aging by implementing new coordinated, person-centered models to bring about optimum, equitable health and social outcomes particularly for those living with complex needs and in underserved communities.”
The SCAN Foundation was created as an independent charitable organization in April 2008 through a $205 million one-time contribution from the not-for-profit SCAN Health Plan. Since its founding, it has awarded more than $75 million in grant funding to hundreds of organizations focused on helping all older adults age with the dignity, choice, and independence that all of us want for ourselves and our families.
The SCAN Foundation has stressed the need for government to create new models for how long-term care should be provided and financed. It has been a national leader in the development and scaling of person-centered care models for vulnerable adults with complex needs, including those served by Medicare and Medicaid, as well as those served by Medicare alone. The foundation has been at the forefront of policy discussions regarding healthcare for older adults and coordinating services both for older adults and their caregivers.
Earlier this year, The SCAN Foundation created a spinoff venture named Alive Ventures. Thanks to a $12 million phased investment from The SCAN Foundation, the startup studio will focus on imagining and building companies, products, and services to help older adults live and work.
Mohanty was selected following an extensive national search. According to The SCAN Foundation Board Chair Jennie Chin Hansen, RN, MS, FAAN, Mohanty’s wealth of experience helped her stand out.
“Sarita is a catalyst and influencer who has not just a remarkable background in a host of medical fields and settings and a firm understanding of the whole healthcare continuum,” Hansen said, “but she brings a warmth and enthusiasm that inspires others.”
“She’s the future,” added SCAN Foundation board member Carol Raphael, who chaired the search committee. “The way she looks at healthcare is what we hope the system becomes. Sarita has worked with vulnerable, complex populations and improved their ability to lead lives of dignity and independence.”
Mohanty is excited to start the next chapter of her professional career with The SCAN Foundation while also continuing to practice as a physician. “We will build on the strong foundation established by Bruce Chernof,” she said. “The SCAN Foundation is considered a national leader. We will use that recognition to expand our collaborative efforts to develop and foster innovative policies and programs that effectively respond to older Americans’ healthcare needs.”
