How can we combat Antimicrobial Resistance?

In 2018, approximately 5,400 people in Canada died as a direct result of Antimicrobial Resistance. Through a combination of over-prescribing and over-use, antibiotics are no longer as effective as they once were; and the situation is worsening. Bacteria are evolving and becoming resistant to the treatments available.

What can we do to prevent this looming public health crisis? How can we protect the effectiveness of our antibiotics?

November 18-24 is World Antibiotic Awareness Week, and two CIHR Scientific Directors are available to answer your questions:

  • Dr. Steven J. Hoffman, Scientific Director of CIHR’s Institute of Population and Public Health, is available to discuss the importance of conserving the efficacy of current and future antibiotics.
  • Dr. Charu Kaushic can discuss CIHR investments in research in AMR prevention, the latest discoveries, and alternatives to antibiotics.
