FAER/ABA Co-Sponsor Research in Education Grant for a Second Year

Raleigh, N.C., and Schaumburg, Ill. – (Nov. 7, 2019) The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) and Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) are co-sponsoring the FAER/ABA Research in Education Grant for a second year to advance the careers and knowledge of physician anesthesiologists interested in key elements of education in anesthesiology.

“The FAER/ABA grant provides opportunities for anesthesiologists to conduct meaningful research related to curriculum, instruction and assessment in anesthesiology education,” said David O. Warner, M.D., ABA secretary. “This work can enrich a physician’s research career and inform the work we do as a board to advance excellence in the practice of our specialty.”

This year, applicants will be asked to submit a letter of intent. After an initial review, selected applicants will be invited to submit full research proposals that evaluate the following elements of ABA board certification:

  1. The value of initial certification and the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology® program (MOCA®) to clinicians and the public, or
  2. The validity and impact of the ABA’s new primary certification program – the staged examination system (BASIC, ADVANCED, and APPLIED Examinations) F

“Partnering with the ABA has offered FAER an excellent opportunity to further education research in anesthesiology,” said Harriet Hopf, M.D., chair of FAER’s Board of Directors. “We are pleased by the ABA’s decision to extend our joint grant for another two years and are excited to continue this endeavor. Given the substantial number of applications we received last year, we look forward to another year of notable success for this joint effort.”

The ABA and FAER will award one $100,000 grant, to be distributed over two years, to a faculty member of any rank. The grant requires that 40% of the faculty member’s time be dedicated to the proposed research. Only board-certified physician anesthesiologists who will not be actively pursuing additional ABA certifications during the grant period will be eligible to apply.

The application process will open on Dec. 1, and the deadline to submit a letter of intent is Dec. 31, 2019. Applicants selected to submit a full proposal will be notified in January 2020. The grant recipient will be announced in June 2020 and the grant period will begin in July 2020.

The ABA will provide the grant recipient with mentoring and access to ABA resources, which may include de-identified physician data, data analysis expertise and other tools necessary to design, conduct and report the project. The grantee may also pursue primary data collection based on their research question.
