Brigham earns another ‘A’ for patient safety in Spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

BOSTON — The Brigham has been awarded an ‘A’ in the

spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

, released today by

The Leapfrog Group

. The designation recognizes the Brigham’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital celebrates its seventh ‘A’ grade since the fall of 2017. The ‘A’ awarded Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital (BWFH) makes it one of just 27 hospitals nationwide to consistently earn that grade since the inception of the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade in 2012. The Safety Grade assigns grades from A-F to all general hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

“We are proud to receive an ‘A’ grade this spring from the Leapfrog Group. This extraordinary achievement is a result of our continuous commitment to the highest standards for patient safety,” said

Andrew Resnick, MD, MBA

, chief Quality and Safety officer at the Brigham. “This accomplishment confirms the tremendous hard work, dedication, and devotion to patient care put forth by our clinicians, staff, volunteers and leadership each and every day.”

“With all the challenges this year has brought, to be named among just 27 hospitals nationwide to have maintained an A grade since 2012 is a huge honor,” said Christi Barney, MSN, RN, Executive Director of Patient Safety, Quality, Risk, Infection Control, Clinical Compliance and CDI at Faulkner. “Here at BWFH, our caregivers are committed to providing the highest quality health care possible each day. I am so proud to be able to share this exciting news with our staff and our patients.”

“An ‘A’ safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but the Brigham shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”

Developed under the guidance of a

national expert panel

, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
