American Society of Anesthesiologists Hosts ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2021

CHICAGO – Higher socioeconomic status does not lead to equal mortality rates for minority children undergoing surgery compared to white children. Cancer patients may live longer if they are given an anti-nausea drug before surgery. Laboring women with symptomatic COVID-19 are more likely to have cesarean sections than those who are asymptomatic. These studies are among the significant research being presented at ANESTHESIOLOGY^® 2021, the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), Oct. 8-12, in San Diego.

ANESTHESIOLOGY^® 2021, the premier gathering of the specialty, will feature:

• Special sessions on COVID-19, reviewing the latest scientific and clinical information, including best practices for the management of COVID-19 patients in the intensive care and perioperative settings and identifying those at risk of longer-term complications after COVID-19 infection.
• Scientific research updates, featuring 400 abstracts highlighting the best science in the specialty, including:
• How the preoperative period provides an opportunity to administer the flu shot in children and may help increase the rate of other vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine once it’s approved in children under 12.
• Identifying risk factors associated with persistent opioid use after surgery in patients who had not previously used the powerful pain relievers, which has implications for helping curb the opioid epidemic.
• How physician-led anesthesia care leads to improved patient safety and outcomes.
• More than 350 educational sessions, covering topics including current options to manage pain during labor and delivery, the opioid crisis, the latest in pediatric pain management, perioperative brain health and postoperative delirium, identifying racial disparity trends in anesthesia, and more.
• Dr. Angela Enright, MB, FRCPC, will present the Ellison C. Pierce Lecture “Anesthesia Safety in an Asymmetrical World,” where she will review the many factors that affect the delivery of safe anesthesia in economically challenged areas of the world.
• James Eisenach, M.D., will present the John W. Severinghaus Lecture “Gadgeteering for Pain Relief,” where he will explore the cognitive and physiologic factors that dampen pain in patients with acute pain, and how knowledge of the neurological connection with pain tolerance is altering acute pain treatment.
• Additionally, media can visit the exhibit hall featuring the latest products, services, and innovations to help anesthesiology and health care professionals deliver high quality and safe patient care.
