Ophthalmology is the most widely read clinical publication within the medical specialty of eye care. Ophthalmology Science was announced earlier this year as the Academy’s first open access journal. The first issue is expected to publish in early 2021. In her new role, Dr. Chew will oversee all journal activities, including the recruitment and management of editorial staff, the peer review process, and ensuring overall quality of scientific content for publication.
Dr. Chew currently serves as the director of the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications (DECA) and the chief of Clinical Trials Branch at the National Eye Institute (NEI). She is particularly passionate about phase 1 and 2 clinical trials, a large focus of the new journal. Dr. Chew has also served on the editorial boards of Ophthalmology Retina, Retina, and Investigative Ophthalmology and Vision Science.
“Dr. Chew brings years of relevant experience to this new role, in addition to a deep commitment to careful study design and meticulous investigation,” said David W. Parke II, MD, CEO for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “She is a nationally respected leader and wonderful writer and editor. I’m confident that her passion, integrity, and commitment will help position Ophthalmology Science for success.”
Dr. Chew received her medical degree and her ophthalmology training at the University of Toronto, School of Medicine. She completed her retina fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute, the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes, and the University of Nijmegen.
“The Ophthalmology journals have always been dedicated to the pursuit of medical excellence and groundbreaking science,” Dr. Chew said. “Now, with the introduction of Ophthalmology Science, we can continue to deliver the latest clinical research with the rising demand for an online, open access platform. I’m excited to support a community of intelligent, driven researchers in this new role.”
