Wills Eye Physicians and Alumnae Named to Inaugural Power List of World’s Top 100 Women in Ophthalmology

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Ten remarkable women who are Wills Eye Hospital faculty physicians and  Wills Eye alumnae have been named to the Inaugural all-women Power List, published by The Ophthalmologist. 

The faculty physician leaders named to this year’s list include: Julia A. Haller, MD, Marlene R.  Moster, MD, and Carol L. Shields, MD. Wills Eye Hospital alumnae include: Ferhina S. Ali, MD,  MPH, Caroline R. Baumal, MD, Helen V. Danesh-Meyer, MD, PhD, Nicole Fram, MD, Alana  Grajewski, MD, Noemi Lois, MD, PhD, and Fairooz P. Manjandavida, MD.  

This first-of-its-kind list honors the top 100 women in ophthalmology; the most influential  female figures – nominated by the publication’s readers and whittled down to the final  selection by an international panel of judges coalesced by the magazine. Factors in the selection  of these international thought leaders include their contributions, influence and excellence in  clinical care, research, education and industry. In the past, the publication’s original Power List had been dominated by men. Last year, Carol L. Shields, MD, was chosen as the #1 physician.  Dr. Shields is the Director of the Wills Eye Ocular Oncology Service and is an internationally  recognized leader in the cancer field. Wills Eye physicians named in previous Power Lists have  included: Allen C. Ho, MD, L. Jay Katz, MD, Jose Pulido, MD, Carl D. Regillo, MD, Jerry A. Shields,  MD, and George L. Spaeth, MD, who was #1 in the inaugural poll by The Ophthalmologist.

Julia A. Haller, MD, is a trailblazing retina surgeon-scientist and leader who has innovated  translational advances against blindness on many fronts. Dr. Haller has published over 400  scientific articles and book chapters, with research interests in retinal pharmacology, macular  surgery, venous occlusive disease, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration,  complicated retinal detachments, health care disparities and gender equality. 

Marlene R. Moster, MD, is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at  Thomas Jefferson University and Attending Glaucoma Surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital. Dr. Moster has published more than 125 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact ophthalmic journals and has  authored or co-authored book and book chapters. She has been an invited guest lecturer both  nationally and internationally on the surgical and medical treatment of glaucoma for such  distinguished organizations as The American Academy of Ophthalmology, The American Society  of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and American Glaucoma Society. Having helped train 113  Clinical Glaucoma Fellows, Dr. Moster also recently received the Outstanding Educator Award  from the America Glaucoma Society.  

Carol L. Shields, MD, is Chief of the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital and Professor  of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Shields has authored or co-authored over  1900 articles in major journals and over 300 textbook chapters. She has presented more than 900 lectureships around the world and is the recipient of many distinguished national and  international awards. Dr. Shields’ work has included some of the most cutting edge and  successful treatments in the ocular oncology field.
