Last summer, the United Nations turned to one of Canada’s leading experts in global health to come up with strategies to guide our social and economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. In ten short weeks, Dr. Steven J. Hoffman and his team mobilized research agencies from around the world to create the UN Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery. The Roadmap identifies research priorities that will support an equitable, resilient and sustainable global recovery from COVID-19.
On Friday January 29, Dr. Hoffman will co-facilitate an “Open Dialogue on Science for Development in the Context of COVID-19”. This virtual event will bring together research funding agencies, U.N. programmes and entities, as well as member states to map out a coordinated research response rooted in science. 100 representatives from more than 60 countries will take part in this virtual gathering co-hosted by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the U.N. Office of Partnerships. United Nations Deputy Secretary General, Amina J. Mohammed, will open the dialogue. Canada’s Permanent Representative to the U.N., Bob Rae, will highlight the importance of evidence-based strategies in his opening remarks.
The event will take place from 10:00 am to 12 noon (ET) on Friday, January 29. It will be broadcast via livestream on webtv.un.org.
Quotes
“We often talk about ways to “build back better” from COVID-19. The research priorities outlined in this Roadmap provide us with a clear path toward an equitable, resilient and sustainable recovery from the pandemic. We should be proud of this important Canadian contribution to the global response effort, and we thank Dr. Hoffman and his team for their terrific work.”
Bob Rae, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations (UN) in New York.
“Science represents our best chance of achieving a more equitable, resilient and sustainable future. COVID-19 recovery efforts must be informed by the full range of science as well as global coordination to ensure no one is left behind. This Open Dialogue and the UN Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery are intended to help kick-start efforts and leverage them for transformative changes.”
