Gregg L. Semenza, M.D., Ph.D., has been awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet for his groundbreaking discovery of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), which helps cells cope with low oxygen levels.
