HCPA Warns Consumers Against Injecting Disinfectants as a Cure for COVID-19

Washington D.C. – The Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA) released the following statement today, attributed to Steve Caldeira, President & CEO, HCPA, following speculation that injecting disinfecting products can be used to cure COVID-19.

“It’s critically important to use disinfecting products as they’re intended and according to the directions on the label. Disinfectants should never be injected, ingested or even applied to the skin. These products are for surface-use only to kill traces of the virus that might be living in homes, hospitals or workplaces. There is absolutely no disinfectant, cleaner, bleach or other home remedy that should be injected or ingested to protect against COVID-19. Ingestion of disinfectants, bleach or any household cleaning product, for that matter, could result in a trip to the emergency room, or worse.

Safety is the top priority of the household and commercial products industry, and we urge consumers to use disinfecting products responsibly and according to the directions on the label, especially as cleaning has become increasingly important to daily routines during the coronavirus pandemic.”
