He provided critical care in high-stakes situations daily. Now, he’s facing a different kind of pressure – the pulse of civilian life. But thanks to Hackensack Meridian Hackensack University Medical Center’s groundbreaking new SkillBridge program, Tyler’s transition is proving anything but stressful.
SkillBridge, a Department of Defense initiative, offers service members nearing the end of their military commitment the chance to gain valuable civilian work experience. Hackensack’s inaugural program, focusing on Emergency Medical Services (EMS), is giving veterans like Tyler a direct pathway to fulfilling careers – from the battlefield to the bedside.
“The military taught me so much, especially about quick thinking and staying calm under pressure,” Tyler explains, as he adjusts from his military uniform to his Hackensack EMT one. “But transitioning to civilian life can be daunting. SkillBridge is a game-changer. It’s allowing me to apply my skills in a new environment, build my resume, and connect with a supportive team.”
Tyler’s days are now filled with the familiar rhythm of emergency response. He works as an EMT in training, alongside experienced paramedics and EMTs, assisting with ambulance transport, providing patient care, and navigating the bustling streets of northern New Jersey. While the setting may be different, the core values remain the same: dedication, teamwork, and a commitment to saving lives.
“It’s been incredibly rewarding,” Tyler says. “The pace is fast, and every day brings new challenges. But I feel like I’m making a real difference, and that’s what matters most.”
Hackensack’s EMS team has embraced Tyler, the first to participate in the hospital’s inaugural program. “These veterans bring a unique skillset and a level of professionalism that’s invaluable,” says Jason Kreitner, MHA, FACHE, Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Hackensack University Medical Center. “They’re already accustomed to working in high-stress environments, and their dedication to patient care is truly inspiring. We’re thrilled to be part of this program and help these heroes transition to civilian success.”
For Tyler, he says with the help of Hackensack’s SkillBridge program, the transfer to civilian life has been seamless. Having grown up in New Jersey, he says it’s been very rewarding to work at HUMC and plans to pursue a career as a paramedic after completing the program. “This experience has given me the confidence and the connections I need to succeed,” he says. “I’m grateful to Hackensack for this opportunity, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.”
Tyler’s story is a testament to the power of partnership and the potential of veterans. Hackensack University Medical Center’s SkillBridge program is not just bridging the gap between military and civilian life; it’s building a stronger, more resilient community, one veteran at a time.
