Known among colleagues and students for his energetic and engaging teaching style, Pangaro joined the USU faculty in 1981. He served in various positions, including director of the Fourth-Year Programs Clerkship, clerkship director, and vice chair for Education in the University’s Department of Medicine. In 1991, he was appointed Professor of Medicine with tenure. Pangaro served as Chair of the department from 2008-2018. He has served as a faculty leader for curricular redesign, developing the School of Medicine’s “molecules to military medicine” curriculum, and also led the development of the university’s Health Professions Education graduate program.
Pangaro earned his medical degree from Georgetown University, where he did his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in endocrinology. He joined the Army as a research fellow in endocrinology at Walter Reed in 1978, when he first taught USU students. He remained on active duty for 20 years.
“Dr. Pangaro is a career academic who has served military medicine as both an Army medical officer and DoD civilian for many years — 40 of them affiliated with USU,” said Dr. Richard W. Thomas, USU president. “He brings abundant experience, impeccable credentials and polished leadership skills to this position.”
Pangaro has focused much of his scholarly work on the evaluation of medical trainees’ competence. He created “standardized examinees” to calibrate the validity of the prototype clinical skills examination of the national Medical Licensing Exam. He also developed the reporter-interpreter-manager-educator framework (the “RIME scheme”) used in many American medical schools, and has introduced a concept of “synthetic” frameworks as an alternative to “KSAs” for defining expectations of students and residents. Throughout his tenure, Pangaro has personally evaluated and provided individual feedback to several thousand medical students, and worked with more than a thousand faculty on their teaching skills.
Pangaro has also served as an at-large member of the National Board of Medical Examiners, and on the editorial boards of Academic Medicine and Teaching and Learning in Medicine, among many other leadership roles for professional organizations. He has also earned many accolades for excellence in his field, including the inaugural Carol Johns Medal of USU, the AAMC’s Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award in 2005, the lifetime achievement award from the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine in 2012, and the John P. Hubbard Award in 2018 from the National Board of Medical Examiners for excellence in the field of evaluation in medicine.
“Military medicine embodies the promise of expertise and duty to which all physicians strive. I am privileged to serve our faculty and students in this role,” Pangaro said.
Pangaro will continue to serve as the Interim Dean until a search committee appoints a new Dean.
