In-air collision marks worst US aviation disaster in decades. What comes next?

On the evening of Wednesday, January 29, 2025, a passenger plane en route to Reagan National Airport outside of Washington, D.C., collided with a U.S. Army helicopter, destroying both craft. There are no known survivors at this time, as rescue efforts become recovery efforts. The event marks the worst plane crash in the United States in 20 years.

Dr. Philip Mann is available to comment about what led to this disaster and what might come next.

Dr. Mann served the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for over 17 years in a variety of roles, including Training Program Manager, Technical Training Instructor, and Curriculum Developer. Before this, Dr. Mann spent years serving the Department of Defense, the U.S. Army, and the National Guard’s Aviation Regiment as an avionic mechanic, aircrew, fire fighter, aviation electronics technician, and several other roles. He is currently the Director of the Center for Project Management Innovation at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology in Central Pennsylvania.
