Ion Pump in Kidneys Controls Blood Volume, Blood Pressure in Pregnancy

Article title: H,K-ATPase type 2 regulates gestational extracellular compartment expansion and blood pressure in mice

Authors: Christine Walter, Chloé Rafael, Samia Lasaad, Stéphanie Baron, Amel Salhi, Gilles Crambert

From the authors:”In this study, we observed that the H,K-ATPase type 2 (HKA2), an ion pump expressed in kidney and colon and already involved in the control of the K+ balance during gestation, is also required for the correct plasma volume expansion and to maintain normal blood pressure.”

This study is highlighted as one of March’s “best of the best” as part of the American Physiological Society’s APSselect program.
