As social media becomes an increasingly popular source of health information, TikTok has emerged as a prominent platform where millions of users, particularly teenagers and young adults, turn to for guidance on a range of health-related topics.
However, a new study by George Washington University researchers shows that while TikTok videos about acne medications, specifically spironolactone, are widespread, the quality and reliability of information are often concerning.
Researchers analyzed the top 50 TikTok videos under the hashtag #spironolactone, which received 108 million views as of December 2023. They found a significant gap in the accuracy and trustworthiness of the content shared on the platform.
The study, Evaluating Quality and Reliability of Most-Viewed TikTok Videos About Spironolactone was published in The Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.
Adam Friedman, one of the researchers and professor and chair of dermatology at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences is available to discuss the findings of this study.
