Smaller Tissue Culture Collections Lead to Better Liver Function

Article title: Microfluidic confinement enhances phenotype and function of hepatocyte spheroids

Authors: Jong Hoon Choi, Lorena Loarca, Jose M. De Hoyos-Vega, Neda Dadgar, Kevin Loutherback, Vijay H. Shah, Gulnaz Stybayeva, Alexander Revzin

From the authors:: “We demonstrate enhanced hepatic function and increased levels of [hepatocyte growth factor] expression in small volume (2 μL) compared to large volume (30 μL) cultures of hepatocytes spheroids. We also demonstrate utility of this culture system for testing protective effects of interleukin (IL)-2 in the context of alcohol injury.”

This study is highlighted as one of September’s “best of the best” as part of the American Physiological Society’s APSselect program.
