New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute will host “Race and the 2020 Presidential Election,” a virtual event featuring a diverse panel of New York Times correspondents, on Tues., Oct. 27, 6-7:30 p.m.
The panel, moderated by Rachel L. Swarns, a professor at the Carter Journalism Institute and a New York Times contributing writer, will consider how issues of race, ethnicity, and immigration are playing out in the presidential campaign and how those issues will impact the upcoming election.

The evening’s panelists are as follows:
- Astead W. Herndon, a national political reporter based in New York, who is covering the 2020 presidential election for the New York Times and as a political analyst for CNN
- Jennifer Medina, a national political reporter based in Los Angeles, who is covering the 2020 presidential election and who previously focused on issues of immigration, education, and poverty as a national correspondent in California
- Caitlin Dickerson, a national correspondent who covers immigration with a focus on detention and deportation policy and who frequently appears as a guest on the New York Times’ podcast, “The Daily”
- John Eligon, a national correspondent who covers race and whose work documents the nuances of America’s struggle with race issues, from the protest movement over police violence to the changing face of the nation’s cities and suburbs
- Sabrina Tavernise, a national correspondent and the lead writer for the New York Times on the Census, capturing major demographic shifts underway in the United States, including in mortality and fertility as well as race and ethnicity
- Rachel L. Swarns, a former Washington correspondent and foreign correspondent for the New York Times and the author of American Tapestry: The Story of the Black, White, and Multiracial Ancestors of Michelle Obama
