WASHINGTON, January 14, 2021 — The American Institute of Physics is still accepting nominations for the 2021 Andrew Gemant Award. The deadline to apply is Jan. 31, 2021.
The Gemant Award is presented every year and recognizes the accomplishments of a person who has made significant contributions to the cultural, artistic, or humanistic dimension of physics.
Self-nominations are permitted, and nominations of women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and scientists from outside the United States are encouraged. Recent winners include Geraldine Cox (2020), Virginia Trimble (2019), and David Kaplan (2018), and previous winners include Lisa Randall (2012), Brian Greene (2003), and Stephen Hawking (1998).
The awardee is chosen based on contributions in one or more of the following areas: creative work in the arts and humanities that derives from a deep knowledge of and love for physics; the interpretation of physics to the public through such means as mass media presentations or public lectures; the enlightenment of physicists and the public regarding the history of physics or other cultural aspects of physics; or clear communication of physics to students who are learning physics as part of their general education.
The award is made possible by a bequest of Andrew Gemant to the American Institute of Physics. The awardee is named by the AIP board of directors based on the recommendation of an outside selection committee appointed by the institute’s board chair.
