Media Advisory: Johns Hopkins Medicine to Host Maryland Hepatitis Summit

Virus closeup

What:
In the United States, hepatitis C virus kills more people than HIV and 59 other infectious diseases combined. Maryland is one of the states hit hardest by the hepatitis C epidemic.

In pursuit of the World Health Organization’s goal of eliminating hepatitis B and C infection by 2030, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will host the 2019 Maryland Hepatitis Summit in collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Baltimore City Health Department, the Maryland Department of Health, the Maryland Hepatitis Coalition, Sisters Together and Reaching, Inc., and local patient advocates.

The Maryland Hepatitis Summit is the first step in an effort among health care, public health and community organizations as well as legislative representatives to prevent health concerns and deaths related to hepatitis infection in Maryland. The goals of the event, which will focus on both hepatitis B and C, are to share best practices and ideas and to coordinate and align approaches to care and treatment for patients — with the objective of eliminating hepatitis in Maryland.
