Fireworks go boom, your ears shouldn’t!

July 4th is around the corner, which calls for a celebration. When we celebrate, we often think of finding the best place to see fireworks, but we often don’t think about the impact it may have on our hearing. We can help with that.

Our seasoned audiologist, Dr. Carla Pielmeier, is more than happy to educate your viewers/readers about the precautions people should take when hearing painful and dangerous noises, like fireworks, for extended periods of time to mitigate any permanent hearing loss.

“One firework in the backyard could be more hurtful to your hearing than professional fireworks – as the action is closer to the ground and closer to you.”

“As a professional Audiologist with more than 33 years at WellSpan Health in south central Pennsylvania, I see how one instance of a very loud noise, or exposure to loud noises over an extended period of time, cause permanent hearing loss.”

“Children are particularly vulnerable because their smaller ears resulting in an even louder sound reaching the inner ear, potentially causing even greater damage.”

“As you celebrate with fireworks this Independence Day, I urge you to consider wearing hearings protection like earmuffs or earplugs made specifically to prevent hearing loss, or staying a bit further away from the loud noises.”

If you want to hear more, let me know when I can connect you with Dr. Pielmeier ahead of holiday celebrations.
