MEDFORD/SOMERVILLE, Mass. (Jan. 24, 2020)–Young people are poised for a potentially historic turnout in the upcoming Iowa caucuses, and young Democrats prefer Sen. Bernie Sanders, according to an exclusive CIRCLE-Tisch College/Suffolk University Iowa youth poll released today by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning & Engagement (CIRCLE)—the preeminent, non-partisan research center on youth engagement at Tufts University’s Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life.
More than a third (35%) of young Iowans (ages 18-29) surveyed say they are “extremely likely” to caucus on Feb. 3, 2020, which, if the survey results mirror actual participation, would represent a three-fold increase over estimated youth participation in the 2016 caucuses. Young Iowans who are registered or identify as Democrats are supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders by a substantial margin: 39% intend to caucus for Sanders, followed by 19% for Sen. Elizabeth Warren, 14% for former Mayor Pete Buttigieg, 9% for entrepreneur Andrew Yang, and 7% for former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. On the GOP side, according to our poll, 85% of young Iowans who are registered or identify as Republicans intend to support President Trump.
“This poll comes at a pivotal time for young people’s electoral participation, following on the heels of the 2018 election when young people’s activism and peer-to-peer outreach propelled a doubling of youth turnout that was decisive in some races,” said Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg, director of Tisch College’s CIRCLE. “While Iowa is only one state, and its population is not representative of voters nationally, our poll suggests that the trend of higher youth participation may well continue in 2020 and beyond.”

Key findings include:
- Potential for historic youth Our poll finds that 35% of Iowa’s youth are extremely likely to participate in the caucuses; more than one-third of those youth reported it would be their first time doing so. If this participation level comes to fruition on Feb. 3, it would represent a remarkable increase over 2016, when we estimated that 11% of youth participated. Moreover, the last two times that only one party had active nominating contests, we estimated that youth turnout in the Iowa caucuses was just 4%.
- Young Democrats in Iowa strongly prefer Sanders, followed by Warren and Buttigieg. While the average of polls in Iowa among all ages shows an extremely competitive four-way race between Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg, our poll shows a clear favorite among young people in a large field with Sanders at 39%, Warren at 19%, Buttigieg at 14%, and Biden at 7%.
- Mobilization and information are key to youth electoral participation. As always, much will depend on outreach efforts, and it is important for contact to include practical information about the caucus process. In our poll, 72% of Iowa youth said they have been personally contacted by a campaign, party, or any other organization that supports political candidates: 82% of young Democrats, 75% of youth who are Independent/unaffiliated, and 60% of young Republicans. But among all youth in the poll, half did not know that they must register with a party in order to participate, and 22% said it is hard to know where to find information about how to participate in the caucuses.
- Issues matter. Though too often pigeonholed by campaigns and candidates, youth are not a monolith and are motivated by a wide range of issues. In Iowa, young people identified the following issues as most important to them in their vote for president: health care (18%), the environment (12%), taxes (12%), and international relations (9%).
The CIRCLE-Tisch College/Suffolk University Iowa youth poll was conducted with the Suffolk University Political Research Center. It surveyed a representative sample of young Iowa residents (N=500), ages 18-29, who are eligible to vote, regardless of their voter registration status. Most respondents were contacted by mobile phone. This survey was conducted between Jan. 15 and Jan. 20, 2020 and is based on live telephone interviews of adults who indicated they were residents of Iowa. The margin of sampling error for results based on the total sample is +/-4.4 percentage points. For more on the poll’s methodology, see here.
