CLEVELAND, Ohio – Steven Fitzgerald, MD, FAAOS, has accepted the position of Chief, Division of Adult Reconstruction, University Hospitals, as well as System Director of High Reliability Medicine for Total Joint Replacement. In this role, Dr. Fitzgerald will assume system-level leadership responsibilities including the Council of Service Lines and Institutes.
“I am excited for Dr. Fitzgerald’s leadership to further develop our outpatient total joint program and strengthen our academic mission. He will build upon our strong foundation to deliver the next generation of care,” said James Voos, MD, Chairman, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and Jack & Mary Herrick Distinguished Chair, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
Dr. Fitzgerald will work to implement system initiatives in the rapidly evolving world of hip and knee replacement. Over the next year and beyond, UH will continue to develop a comprehensive system wide outpatient total joint program, and implement new technologies that will keep us at the forefront of total joint replacement.
Dr. Fitzgerald assumes leadership from Matthew Kraay, MD, who served as Chief, Division of the Joint Reconstruction and Arthritis Surgery. Dr. Kraay will still be the Director for The Center for Joint Replacement and Preservation at UHCMC, physician lead for UH’s commercial COE for Walmart and GE, and Co-Director of his Implant Retrieval Lab and Registry program. “We are grateful to Dr. Kraay for his years of dedication to our joint replacement program. He has led the way in creating a nationally recognized program with his clinical and administrative expertise,” said Voos.
Dr. Fitzgerald joined UH as an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon in 2011 and has served in various roles for ten years, including Medical Director of Adult Reconstruction at UH Ahuja Medical Center. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Fitzgerald attended and graduated with honors from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Orthopedics at Case Western Reserve University – University Hospitals, and his fellowship at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Adult Reconstructive Orthopedics.
