John Pavlik, a Rutgers professor of journalism and media studies, is available to comment on new Rutgers research that examines how drones are shaping journalism, their role in immersive news content and potential ethical concerns.
“Drones play an increasingly central role in the development of immersive news content. But there is no clear industry guideline for their ethical and safe use in news gathering. News organizations need to develop these guidelines now, to avoid the accidental or intentional misuse of drones to invade privacy or create compelling deepfakes. These devices have a legitimate ability to contextualize the news, such as by providing wide-angle views of news events, and can help legacy news media add value to their journalism and potentially rebuild public trust in the news, which has eroded in recent decades,” Pavlik said.
Pavlik studies and writes about the impact of technology on journalism, media and society.
