Experts Available to Discuss Bruce Springsteen’s Cultural Contributions Ahead of his 70th Birthday
New Brunswick, N.J. (Aug. 22, 2019) – Rutgers scholars are available to discuss Bruce Springsteen’s multifaceted contributions to music and American culture ahead of The Boss’ 70th birthday on Sept. 23.
Louis Masur, a professor of American studies and history who will teach a course on Springsteen’s American Vision in the fall, said, “Before Springsteen became a critical voice in thinking about the meaning of America, he helped define New Jersey. From the beginning of his career, with gigs at Asbury Park’s Student Prince, Upstage and Stone Pony, he has made the Garden State a place to be proud of. His songs captured a moment in the 70s and 80s, in particular how people in New Jersey came to think of what it means to be alive.”
Azzan Yadin-Israel, a professor of Jewish studies and author of The Grace of God and the Grace of Man: The Theologies of Bruce Springsteen, said, “Throughout his career, Springsteen has maintained an ongoing dialogue with the Bible and the Catholic traditions of his youth. This nature of his dialogue has shifted over time, from a very critical approach in his earlier work, to a more reconciled tone in his later albums. But at all times, it is an exciting, often brilliant aspect of his artistry.”
