New Brunswick, NJ – The Rutgers School of Public Health and the Center for Tobacco Studies is excited to announce that Michelle Jeong, PhD, has joined the department of health behavior, society and policy, as an assistant professor, and Center for Tobacco Studies as a member.
Jeong is a behavioral scientist who bridges communication theory and public health outcomes to conduct tobacco regulatory research. Building on her training in health communication, her work inquires into how people, particularly youth and young adults, perceive and are affected by different tobacco communication efforts disseminated by both tobacco control groups and the tobacco industry, in the context of various combustible and non-combustible tobacco products.
Jeong’s newly-awarded NIH K01 grant will support her work monitoring the potential for youth exposure to e-cigarette marketing and examining the impact of specific e-cigarette marketing features on youths’ perceptions and use intentions.
“Dr. Jeong joins the growing Center for Tobacco Studies,” says Cristine Delnevo, professor and center director. “Her research interest and expertise nicely complement the current tobacco control research in our Center. We look forward to her science informing tobacco control policies and regulations.”
“The department of health behavior, society and policy is excited to add Dr. Jeong to its growing faculty,” said Paul Duberstein, department chair. “Dr. Jeong’s expertise in public health messaging and youth will enrich our School and have a positive impact on New Jersey’s communities.”
“I am excited to be joining the department of health behavior, society and policy and continuing my work at the Center for Tobacco Studies” said Jeong. “I look forward to collaborating with colleagues, engaging with students, and making my contributions to the School of Public Health and its mission.”
Jeong has a PhD and MA in communication from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in communication from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Rutgers, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, working with their Center for Regulatory Research on Tobacco Communication.
