Since its inception in 1995, the mission for A Woman’s Journey has remained the same: to empower women to make the right health care decisions for their families and themselves.
WHAT: Johns Hopkins Medicine’s A Woman’s Journey is an annual women’s health conference that provides attendees with vital information regarding medical advances, changes in technology and cutting-edge research, among other topics. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of this one-of-a-kind event and attendees will find even more information and resources at their fingertips. Registrants can choose three of 24 seminars, hear from inspirational keynote speakers and participate in an “Ask the Expert” session where over 25 Johns Hopkins specialists will be available to discuss various topics of interest to attendees.
WHY: 25th Anniversary of A Woman’s Journey — Baltimore is an opportunity to hear from Johns Hopkins faculty physicians about new discoveries and innovations in preventing, diagnosing and treating illnesses that particularly affect women.

WHO: Spotlight speakers and topics include:
Breakfast Keynote Speaker: Maria Dennis, WLIF radio personality and cancer survivor, will share her battle to survive leukemia and how it continues to affect her daily life.
Lunch Keynote Speaker: Bonnielin Swenor, M.P.H., Ph.D., associate professor of ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, will reveal her unexpected loss of vision and how this disability has challenged her pursuit of family, career and life and led her to research the very impairment that affects her low vision.
Our Skin Microbiome: Meg Gerstenblith, M.D., clinical associate of dermatology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will discuss the skin microbiome and how millions of microorganisms reside in the body to protect the skin and convey immunity as well as play a role in maintaining skin health and preventing skin disorders from acne to eczema.
Diagnosing and Treating Cancer in Women of Color: Otis Brawley, M.D., Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, will address the sociological and molecular reasons behind often disappointing medical outcomes among women of color.
Promise and Progress in Cancer: William Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., professor of oncology and director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, will share good news about cancer survival and discern paradigms for treatments, including liquid biopsies, bone marrow transplants, precision medicine, DNA testing and immunotherapy.
Guidelines to Prevent Cardiac Disease: Roger Blumenthal, M.D., Pollin Professor of Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, will review and discuss current guidelines to help consumers reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Topics will cover recent guidelines for aspirin, cholesterol and blood pressure management.
Common Sports Injuries in Women: Andrew Cosgarea, M.D., professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will probe the gender-specific diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries that are more prevalent in women.
Relationships Matter: Karen Swartz, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will articulate the pillars of relationships with friends, siblings, parents, spouses and children and the impact they can have on daily health.
Reducing Your Risk of Alzheimer’s: Rebecca Gottesman, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, will reveal recent research showing the importance of factors we can control to reduce our risk of developing dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.
