It’s time for the 2020 census. Why the once-a-decade count is important and what’s new this year

The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to start mailing information to households this week detailing how to respond to the 2020 census. The census, which is mandated by the Constitution, has been taken every 10 years since 1790.

Historian Margo Anderson can explain why everyone should be counted, what lessons can be learned when the government didn’t count everyone, and why the United States was innovative in tying political representation to population growth and change.

A distinguished professor emerita of history at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Anderson can also talk about the recent attempt to put a citizenship question on the census questionnaire and what’s in store for the 2020 head count. She is the author of “The American Census: A Social History.”
