Dr. Juan Carlos Caicedo Named Transplant Surgery Leader at Lurie Children’s

Juan Carlos Caicedo, MD, FACS, was named Division Head of Transplant & Advanced Hepatobiliary Surgery and Surgical Director for the Siragusa Transplantation Center at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago as of February 10, 2025.

Dr. Caicedo brings over two decades of distinguished experience in complex pediatric and adult transplant surgery at both Lurie Children’s and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His surgical expertise spans the full spectrum of abdominal transplantation, including kidney, liver, intestinal and multi-visceral transplants. He also is internationally recognized for his long-standing commitment to improving equity in healthcare for Hispanic transplant recipients and was the inaugural Chair of the Diversity Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS).

“Dr. Caicedo’s visionary leadership, surgical excellence and commitment to innovation will further elevate Lurie Children’s transplant program as a national and international leader in patient care, research and education,” said Thomas Inge, MD, PhD, Surgeon-in-Chief at Lurie Children’s. “His appointment marks an exciting new chapter in our continuing mission to provide world-class transplant care for children.”

Dr. Caicedo is a Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and was Surgical Director of the Liver Transplant Program at Northwestern. He will maintain his roles at Northwestern as Director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant Program and Director of the Hispanic Transplant Program, which he founded.

“Creating these dual leadership roles at Lurie Children’s and Northwestern’s transplant programs will enhance opportunities for innovation in living donor transplantation and strengthen the already robust collaboration between our institutions,” said Dr. Inge. “Through this partnership, we look forward to continued growth in our abdominal transplant programs.”

Calendar year 2024 marked many milestones for the transplant program at Lurie Children’s, including completing 44 kidney transplants, the most of any pediatric transplant program in the U.S., and the third highest volume of abdominal transplants.

Dr. Caicedo succeeds Dr. Riccardo Superina, whose pioneering contributions to pediatric transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery have established him as an international luminary in the field. As the Surgical Director of the Siragusa Transplantation Center since 1997, his legacy of surgical excellence and innovation has profoundly shaped the transplant program at Lurie Children’s.  Dr. Superina will continue as the Surgical Director of Advanced Hepatobiliary Surgery and Surgical Director of the Intestinal Transplant Program at Lurie Children’s. He will also continue to hold the Robert E. Schneider Chair in Transplantation.
