David Eisner has been selected to serve as the eighth editor-in-chief of the Journal of General Physiology (JGP), effective January 1, 2020. Eisner, the British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiac Physiology at the University of Manchester, succeeds Sharona Gordon, who has led the journal since 2014.
“When I first studied membrane physiology and biophysics as an undergraduate, JGP papers were essential reading. If anyone had told me then that I would eventually be leading the journal, I would not have believed them,” says Eisner, who is active on Twitter at @DavidAEisner. “I would like to maintain JGP’s core strengths in fundamental membrane and cellular physiology while reaching out to those whose research involves applying these to the normal and abnormal function of our tissues and organs. It would also be good to increase the international presence of JGP.”
Eisner’s research is focused on the regulation of intracellular calcium in the heart with his most recent work studying diastolic calcium concentration. He holds a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a DPhil in Physiology from Oxford University, and he is a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences as well as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Eisner previously served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology and The Journal of Physiology.
JGP is published by Rockefeller University Press (RUP), a department of The Rockefeller University, which assembled a search committee to identify a candidate. Candidates were invited to submit vision statements following a public call for applications and outreach to leaders in the field of physiology, informed by recommendations from JGP editors and advisory board members. The search committee unanimously recommended Eisner.
“RUP is thrilled to welcome Dr. Eisner as the incoming JGP editor-in-chief, as his accomplishments and research make him well suited to represent the JGP community,” says RUP Executive Director Susan King. “JGP will benefit from Dr. Eisner’s extensive editorial leadership experience, and we look forward to his building on the success JGP achieved under Dr. Gordon’s editorship.”
The search committee included JGP Associate Editor Eduardo Rios, Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Rush Medical College; JGP Associate Editor Rick Aldrich, the Karl Folkers Chair of Interdisciplinary Medical Research and Professor of Neurobiology in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas; past JGP Editor-in-Chief Olaf Anderson, Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at Weill Cornell Medicine; Journal of Cell Biology (JCB) Editor-in-Chief Jodi Nunnari, Professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at University of California, Davis; and Tom Walz, Professor of Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemical Biology and Structural Biology at The Rockefeller University.
RUP would like to thank Gordon for her dedicated leadership and for fostering collegiality within her team of associate editors; her commitment to gender balance in science and academia; and for championing JGP as a premier journal in the field of physiology. The Rockefeller University would also like to thank the members of the search committee for their thoughtful insight and counsel throughout the search process.

About the Journal of General Physiology (JGP)
JGP publishes mechanistic and quantitative cellular and molecular physiology of the highest quality; provides a best-in-class author experience; and nurtures future generations of researchers. All editorial decisions on research manuscripts are made through a collaborative consultation between the editor-in-chief and associate editors, all of whom are active scientists. Established in 1918, JGP is published by the Rockefeller University Press, a department of The Rockefeller University in New York, NY. For more information, visit www.jgp.org.
