Court ruling opens way for first US Injection Site, health law expert available for comment

The director of Health Law at Creighton University, Kelly Dineen, is available to talk about the Wednesday ruling by allowing a Philadelphia nonprofit group to open the first supervised injection facility in the U.S., where people can use illegal opioids under medical supervision without violating federal drug laws

U.S. District Judge Gerald McHugh ruled Wednesday that Safehouse’s plan to allow people to bring in their own drugs and use them in a medical facility to help combat fatal overdoses does not violate the Controlled Substances Act.

“The Department of justice sued Philadelphia to prevent them from opening a center to prevent overdoses. These centers are widespread in Canada and other countries and have a well documented record of saving lives and reducing harm associated with substance use disorders,” says Dineen.
