AERA to Hold Virtual Awards Celebration on October 3

WHAT

The American Educational Research Association is holding a Virtual Awards Celebration on October 3, 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT, to honor recipients of the 2020 AERA Awards and to give attendees an inside look at exemplary accomplishments in education research across areas of study and career stages.

The celebration will feature live “backstage” conversations with award winners and videos highlighting their contributions. The event will also include a special presentation by 2019–2020 AERA President Vanessa Siddle Walker and a tribute to members of the education research community who died in the past year.

Among this year’s 16 awardees is Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, who is receiving the AERA Distinguished Public Service Award. She is being recognized for her staunch, innovative, and bipartisan commitment to scientific research across all fields of science; her special interest in the value of education research to advance opportunities for women and persons of color in the STEM workforce; and her deep appreciation that data and studies are essential to ensuring supportive and inclusive climates in educational and research environments.

Also being honored is Harvard University scholar Howard Gardner, who is receiving the AERA Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education Award. Gardner is internationally known for his theory of multiple intelligences, which transformed the field of education in authentic assessment, teacher development, human potential, and curriculum design and implementation. His interdisciplinary research program, including Project Zero and the Good Project, has advanced groundbreaking understanding of student creativity and engagement.
