ROSEMONT, Ill. (April 5, 2021)—The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) announced Peter S. Rose, MD, FAAOS, as the editor-in-chief designee of the Journal of the AAOS (JAAOS®). Professor of orthopaedics and division chair of orthopaedic oncology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Dr. Rose will begin overseeing the publication January 1, 2022.
A native of Texas, Dr. Rose attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He spent a year doing research for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) before beginning his orthopaedic surgery residency at Mayo Clinic. After becoming interested in tumor surgery, he completed two fellowships: one in spine surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, and the other in tumor surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. Dr. Rose’s current practice focuses on tumors of the spine, chest wall, and extremities. He was previously the fellowship director for orthopaedic oncology for 11 years and headed up the resident basic science education curriculum for five years at Mayo Clinic.
Prior to his appointment as editor-in-chief designee, Dr. Rose was involved with JAAOS for nearly 10 years, currently serving as the deputy editor of the oncology section.
“I’ve grown up with the journal,” said Dr. Rose. “With every article that I’ve been involved with, I’ve learned something, so it is as much a benefit to me as I hope to other members of the Academy. As editor-in-chief, I want to maintain the focus on high-quality peer-reviewed and evidence-based review and research content that really impacts and brings value to the practice of orthopaedic surgery.”
According to AAOS Past President Joseph A. Bosco III, MD, FAAOS, Dr. Rose will succeed Dr. William N. Levine, MD, FAAOS, who served as the publication’s editor-in-chief for six years. “JAAOS is the centerpiece of our educational publications and Dr. Levine performed admirably as its editor-in-chief. Filling his shoes was a formidable undertaking for which we engaged a search firm to guide us through a fair and rigorous process. We were all impressed by the applicants’ quality and humbled by their willingness to serve. It was difficult to select only one. Dr. Rose has an exceptional track record with the journal and the potential to bring JAAOS to new heights.”
Of his plans for the journal as editor-in-chief, Dr. Rose plans to expand the digital presence of the journal, including digital access to the journal through an integration with the Orthopaedic Video Theater, which features high-quality surgical technique videos that the Academy continues to curate. In addition, onboarding a new deputy editor for the journal whose primary focus will be to increase online engagement through social media.
Dr. Rose also plans to improve the author experience of the journal. “We’ve been working to improve the author experience, and that’s certainly something I want to continue, so that its more efficient when they submit to us. They get a decision and any feedback that is valued and professional to further the manuscript and decide its fate. One of the biggest things we want to do is have a rapid evaluation for authors, because no one wants to submit a manuscript and wait months and months for any feedback.”
“I can honestly think of nobody more deserving than Dr. Rose to take over the h-elm,” said Dr. Levine. “I have had the pleasure of working with him for the past decade, and I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone more diligent, thoughtful, and efficient. I am so excited to see the great heights he brings the journal under his leadership.”
