YiPing Chen wins IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Craniofacial Biology

Alexandria, Va., USA – The International Association for Dental Research (IADR) announced YiPing Chen, Tulane University, New Orleans, La., USA, as the 2021 recipient of the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Craniofacial Biology Research. Chen was recognized during the Opening Ceremonies of the virtual 99th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, held in conjunction with the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR), on July 21-24, 2021.

Chen holds the John L. and Mary Wright Ebaugh Chair in Science and Engineering and is Professor and Chair in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Tulane University, New Orleans, La., USA. He began his studies at Fujian Normal University, China, where he completed his M.S. in biology. He then completed a Ph.D. at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, USA, before moving to Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass., USA, for a postdoctoral fellowship.

Chen is a leader in the field of tooth and craniofacial development and has published more than 100 research papers. As a developmental biologist, Chen’s research focuses on genetic control and molecular regulation of mammalian organ development and pathogenesis, with a specific emphasis on craniofacial and cardiac development and regeneration. His research on genetic regulation of tooth development began when he studied the functional mechanism of Msx1 in mouse tooth development, the first gene whose mutation was identified to cause tooth agenesis. Chen has continuously worked on the dentition and made significant contributions to the field. He has also worked extensively on cleft palate and has identified genes and their functions in normal palate development and in the formation of cleft palate.

The IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Craniofacial Biology Research was established to recognize individuals who have contributed to the body of knowledge in craniofacial biology over a significant period of time, and whose research contributions have been accepted by the scientific community. It is one of the 17 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards and is one of the highest honors bestowed by IADR. The award consists of a monetary award and a plaque.
